Raffaele Chiulli has been officially elected as the president of SportAccord Convention at the organisation’s general assembly today (Thursday), part of the ongoing event in Gold Coast, Australia.
Chiulli takes over from Francesco Ricci Bitti, who has been serving as acting president since the untimely death of Patrick Baumann in October last year.
Chiulli was last year appointed as the president of the Council of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), formerly known as SportAccord, himself as a replacement for Baumann in that role. Chiulli will unite the two roles once again when he is officially endorsed as the full-time GAISF president tomorrow.
As the president of the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF), Chiulli’s election was essentially a formality due to the two-year rotation policy of the SportAccord presidency agreed in 2017 .
The policy will see the leadership of SportAccord move between ARISF, the Association of International Olympic Winter Federations (AIOWF), the Association of Independent Members of SportAccord and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) every other year.
“I am proud to have been unanimously elected as SportAccord president,” said Chiulli. “Sport has never been more relevant as a means of bringing people together around the values of inspiration, unity and respect.”
