China relinquishes Asian Cup hosting rights due to Covid-19 pandemic

China has relinquished its hosting rights for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup due to “exceptional circumstances” caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced.

The pan-regional tournament was due to be staged across 10 cities in China from June 16 to July 17 next year. However, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) requested to relinquish its rights following talks with the AFC.
