Chignell takes up marketing role with World Surf League

Will Chignell has been appointed as chief marketing officer of the World Surf League (WSL).

Chignell will support chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt and her executive team in leading the WSL in 2018 and beyond. He will oversee global marketing, brand, social media, public relations and communications.

Chignell previously served as the chief marketing and communications officer for the America’s Cup sailing event, and also worked with Goldschmidt at England’s Rugby Football Union.

Prior to these roles, Chignell ran his own marketing and communications consultancy and also worked for UK pay-television broadcaster Sky Sports.

"I can't wait to join such a talented, passionate team, and a brand and sport that has such enormous potential," Chignell said. "There are many landmark events on the horizon, and the WSL, the sport and the athletes have an amazing story to tell."

Goldschmidt added: “We're very fortunate to have Will join the organisation. He's a proven and respected leader in the marketing and communications arena, with broad experience across the world, in many events, in a variety of sports.

“As chief marketing officer, he was instrumental in the success of the compelling, profitable America's Cup last year, which WSL can learn from as we look forward. The future is bright for WSL and the sport of surfing in the coming years."

Chignell becomes the latest individual to join the WSL’s executive team. Goldschmidt was appointed as chief executive of the WSL in July 2017, and in August the league named Joseph Carr, a former senior executive at the Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts series, as its new chief strategy officer.

Chignell joins the WSL during a pivotal period for surfing, with the sport to make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, Japan.
