The College Football Playoff board of managers agreed to begin the expanded 12-team playoff during the 2024-25 season after initially agreeing in September to expand the event in the 2026.
In October, Hancock said that he had doubts of implementing the new format earlier than 2026 when the current domestic rights contract with ESPN concludes. The final hurdle facing the CFP expansion was resolution of the Rose Bowl's contract and a pursuit by that bowl's leadership to retain its New Year's Day game and timeslot, one in which they ultimately relented in order to advance the overall accelerated timetable for expansion.
