Senior sports media figure Carlo Pozzali has become an investor in and senior advisor to US-based data and technology company Sports Data Labs.
The company, which was founded in 2015 by Mark Gorski, Stan Mimoto and Vivek Khare, is a pioneer in developing technology to capture, analyse, distribute and monetise real-time physiological and performance data from live sports events. It aims to open up what it claims is a multi-billion-dollar market.
Pozzali was a founding partner and board member of global sports media rights company MP & Silva and was involved in a range of high-profile media-rights deals with organisations including the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, and the ATP 250s. He was previously a senior executive with Sportfive – now Lagardère Sports – and IMG.
He joins a group of angel investors in Sports Data Labs which includes Andrea Radrizzani’s Aser Group.
Sports Data Labs technology and expertise has been used in live broadcast in more than 150 countries by media organisations including Eleven Sports, Eurosport, Fox Sports, beIN Sports, Facebook, Sony Ten, BT Sport and SuperSport.
The company has worked with clients including the ATP Tour and The Professional Squash Association (PSA) and broke new ground by creating a $100,000 (€90,500) prize pool for PSA players, who allow commercialisation of their in-match physiological data collected from PSA Platinum and World Championship events.
Sports Data Labs chief executive Gorski said: “We are excited to have Carlo as an investor and board advisor. His proven track record of building global brands will be a tremendous asset as we continue to develop our commercial and investment strategy.”
