Buenos Aires and Santiago, the capital cities of Argentina and Chile, have submitted bids to host the 2023 Pan American Games.
The Pan American Sports Organisation (Paso) confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) that both cities had entered their initial applications by the deadline of the end of January.
Formal applications must now be submitted to the organisation by the end of April, along with further information and a deposit.
Paso will vote for the winning host city at its general assembly in Lima later this year.
Buenos Aires staged the inaugural edition of the Games in 1951.
“Argentina is seeking to host the Pan American Games again at the city that saw their birth, Buenos Aires, in 1951, 66 years ago,” Paso said. “Santiago in Chile is nominated for the second successive time and is confident that it fulfils all of the necessary conditions to organise the main sports celebration of the Americas by offering to serve as excellent hosts.”
The Canadian city of Toronto staged the most recent edition of the Games in 2015, while the Peruvian capital of Lima will host the next event in 2019.
