The Brooklyn Nets are already cashing in on the recent free-agency signings of NBA superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, with significant increases in ticket sales, merchandise sales, internet traffic, and social-media engagement.
Since June 30 – the day it was announced that Durant, Irving and DeAndre Jordan were joining the club – the Nets have generated more in ticket revenue than the entirety of the 2018-19 season. The team has also set a franchise record for traffic at its online merchandise store three times, and had its nine-most engaged Instagram posts and two-most engaged tweets of all time.
“With our recent signings, our expectation is that we will surpass our highest revenue marks in franchise history this year,” Nets majority owner Mikhail Prokhorov told Bloomberg.
According to the New York Post, June 30 was the largest single day of ticket-sales activity in franchise history, with staff receiving almost 1,000 phone calls. The team has reportedly also added nearly 100,000 new followers on Instagram.
The Nets were last in the NBA in attendance last season, with average crowds of 14,941 per game at the Barclays Center. Even with Durant expected to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season due to injury, Nets attendance is expected to rise sharply.
The Post has also reported that Barclays is looking to bring a premature end to its stadium naming-rights partnership, which runs until 2032. The London-based bank currently pays approximately $10m a year, which the Nets can expect to now double.
