The Boston Celtics have completed the purchase of their long-standing G League affiliate team, the Maine Red Claws.
The sale means that the National Basketball Association team will be better able to help the Red Claws’ player development and fan engagement efforts. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Celtics confirmed that they are committed to keep the Red Claws in Portland, Maine, in the long-term. “This is where the franchise is and we’re not moving it,” said Wyc Grousbeck, Celtics lead owner and governor.
Fan interest in the Red Claws is likely to spike this season with the Celtics’ signing of prominent 7ft 7in center Tacko Fall on a two-way contract, meaning that he will spend the majority of the upcoming campaign in the G League.
Fall has become an instant fan favorite of the Celtics after signing with the team in the summer. NBC Sports Boston will televise all 24 of the Red Claws’ home games.
“Tacko Time up here is going to be incredible,” Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca said.
