Berlusconi joins salary cap bloc

Berlusconi was reported by the ANSA news agency as saying that footballer salaries are “outside reality”

“It is necessary to introduce a salary cap. [Footballers’ salaries] are unacceptable, distant from the real economy in which we live in a difficult time like this. They are outside every parameter,” he said.

Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro however put into question Silvio Berlusconi’s rationale into introducing a salary cap. “Maybe president Berlusconi was thinking about Milan when he spoke about salary caps,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s not as easy as it seems. Players are aware of the global economic downturn, but reducing salaries will not resolve the problems in football. If they reduce our salaries, then ticket prices will have to go down too.”

Berlusconi also denied speculation he intends to sell part of his stake in the Serie A club.
