The Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) has revealed that Beijing and northern Chinese city Zhangjiakou will launch a joint bid to host the 2022 winter Olympics.
In an announcement made this morning, 2008 summer Games host city Beijing will stage the ice events while Zhangjiakou – a city in Hebei province 200-kilometres northwest of Beijing – will host the snow sports.
An intercity railway has been planned to connect the Chinese capital to Zhangjiakou, with an estimated 40-minute journey time. The construction is expected to start at the end of this year.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set the bid application deadline for November 14, with the host city election taking place on July 31, 2015. Kazakhstan's Almaty has submitted its bid for the 2022 Games, whilst Ukraine’s Lviv is keen on hosting the event and Slovakia’s Low Tatras along with Polish city Krakow are also planning a joint bid.
