BBL approves new Surrey joint ownership

The British Basketball League (BBL) has approved a change of ownership for its Surrey franchise.

London United Basketball Club and Surrey Sports Park – where the team plays its home fixtures – are now joint owners of the franchise, which changed its name from Surrey Heat to Surrey United.

BBL chief operating officer Andy Webb said: "The BBL believes the franchise has been strengthened by the changes and we look forward to working with the new board. There is a significant opportunity for the increased growth of basketball in the Surrey area, and we believe the additional resources this transaction enables will help make that happen."

Emma Chambers of London United Basketball Club added: "We want to create a programme that provides the dedicated Surrey fans with a competitive BBL team consisting of exciting talent, but also by engaging with the community and building strong foundations to develop young talent in the Surrey area.”

Under the terms of the new ownership, the team will continue to play at Surrey Sports Park.
