Real estate development project Bandar Malaysia has agreed a deal to title sponsor this year’s Malaysia Open golf tournament.
The Malaysia Open is returning to the Asian Tour this year after a four-year hiatus, and will take place at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club on March 5-8. It is run by the Malaysian Golf Association, has been sanctioned by both the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation, and is offering a prize purse of $1m (€930,000). The winner will receive $180,000.
Under the deal, the tournament will be named the Bandar Malaysia Open 2020.
Bandar Malaysia is a development company in charge of a large real estate and transit project on the site of the former Sungai Besi (Sempang) Airport on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. It is planned as a hub that will connect the city with Singapore via a high-speed rail line.
The other sponsors of this year’s Malaysia Open are: Tree Technologies, tourism body Tourism Malaysia, Mazda (official car), Sunway Clio Hotel (official hotel), 100PLUS (official drinks), Callaway (official equipment), Titoni (official timekeeper), CrestLink (official Aapparel), Kenwood (official communications) and Luen Heng (official spirits). News services Malay Mail and The Edge are media partners and Golf Malaysia is the official magazine. The championship is also supported by telco brand TM Unifi, medical aid charity Red Crescent and local authority Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam.
Announcing the deal, Cho Minn Thant, commissioner and chief executive of the Asian Tour, said: “We are very pleased to see that Bandar Malaysia has come on board as title sponsor. We welcome this partnership and together we look forward to working together to make the Bandar Malaysia Open 2020 a very special occasion and add another chapter to the tournament’s esteemed history.”
MGA President Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said: “This much-storied championship is the pride of Malaysia’s golfing community and we are happy that Bandar Malaysia shares our passion in growing the profile of the game of golf in this country. With Bandar Malaysia onboard, it certainly adds prominence to this world-class professional event and we look forward to an exciting week ahead.”
