The Austrian Bundesliga is to become the latest top-tier club football league in Europe to launch its own esports competition.
The ‘eBundesliga’ will commence in October, with all clubs in the Austrian top flight to enter a team into the tournament.
Teams will compete in a league based on EA Sports’ ‘Fifa 18’ computer game, which is due to launch shortly before the inaugural competition begins. The eBundesliga will feature a series of multi-stage, online contests, as well as offline events that will be played in a live environment.
The contest is open to players aged 16 years or older and are residing in Austria.
Last month, the Dutch Eredivisie also launched its own esports competition based on the ‘Fifa 17’ edition of the EA Sports game. The debut E-Divisie began on February 9 in association with all clubs in the country’s top flight, EA Sports and production company Endemol Shine Nederland.
In October last year, the French Football League joined forces with EA Sports to launch its own nationwide esports competition, e-Ligue 1.
Away from football, the NBA North American basketball league last month also launched its own competition in the form of the NBA 2k eLeague.
