ARD and ZDF add sub-licensed German ice hockey highlights

German public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF have expanded their commitment to the DEL, the country’s national ice hockey league, by agreeing a new sublicensing deal with rights-holder Deutsche Telekom, the German telecoms operator.

From November 23, the ARD Sportschau and ZDF SPORTextra programmes will show additional highlights of select DEL games played on Friday evenings. The highlights will be broadcast every Saturday morning for the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

As of March 21, there will also be regular coverage of DEL games, including the playoff finals series, in ZDF’s ‘das aktuelle sportstudio’ and ‘ZDF SPORTreportage’ programmes.

In December 2018, Telekom Sport, the pay-television channel operated by Deutsche Telekom, extended its rights deal for the DEL. Telekom Sport had an existing deal that was due to expire mid-2020. The four-year extension will run to the middle of 2024.
