UK pay-television broadcaster BSkyB has extended its partnership with boxing promoter Matchroom Sport for a further two years through to the summer of 2016.
Matchroom has been the principle provider of Sky’s boxing content since an initial deal in August 2012 and the extended agreement, which commences from June 2014, commits the broadcaster to 20 shows per season.
Sky’s next boxing broadcast comes tomorrow when Scott Quigg contests the WBA world super-bantamweight title against Cuba’s Yoandris Salinas at London’s O2 Arena on a bill featuring the debut of heavyweight Anthony Joshua and fellow London 2012 gold medalist Luke Campbell.
Matchroom boasts British world champions Carl Froch, Darren Barker and Ricky Burns among its stable of fighters, while Sky has increased its commitment to global boxing in recent months with world stars Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Gennady Golovkin all set to appear on its channels before Christmas this year.
Boxing coverage on Sky also includes weekly magazine programme Ringside and its Behind the Ropes and The Gloves Are Off documentaries, which Sky’s executive producer of boxing Adam Smith said would continue under the new Matchroom deal.
