Fiorentina has unveiled plans for a new 40,000-capacity stadium, while fellow Italian Serie A football club Cagliari has announced that work on its new ground will begin within a month.
Work on Fiorentina’s new facility is expected to begin in 2019 and the club hopes to move in by 2021. The ground will form part of a wide-ranging development that will also include a shopping centre, hotel and transport links.
The stadium, which will be built in a northwestern suburb of Florence, is expected to cost €420m ($448m).
“It's a historic moment,” Fiorentina owner Andrea Della Valle said, according to the Associated Press news agency. “We're presenting an important project for Florence and for all of Italy. It will be a sort of Purple Renaissance.”
