Manchester United sets out plans for global MUTV app

English Premier League football club Manchester United has revealed plans to launch a premium app for coverage of its in-house television channel, MUTV.

The plans were revealed by United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward during a conference call addressing the club’s quarterly financial results for the period ending December 31, 2016.

While the terms of media-rights deals with the Premier League will preclude the service being made available in the UK, Woodward said United plans to go live with the project in more than 160 countries later this year. The new app is likely to have different pricing options ranging from £1.49 (€1.73/$1.85) to £4.99 per month.

Woodward said: “It will provide access to a continuous live stream of United’s 24-hour television channel and on-demand library of top picks, documentary boxsets, studio shows, recent games, highlights and classic matches.

“The app will allow us to build a global base of customers, tracking user behaviour within the app to test and optimise marketing. It's something that we expect to grow steadily over time. We believe the mobile side of the business will grow over the years.”
