Liberty Media completes F1 takeover, replaces Ecclestone with Carey

Liberty Media has completed its takeover of Formula One and brought an end to Bernie Ecclestone’s four-decade reign as the commercial supremo of the motor-racing world championship by bringing in media industry veteran Chase Carey as chief executive.

Ecclestone (left of picture) will become ‘chairman emeritus’ and will remain “available as a source of advice for the board of F1,” Liberty Media confirmed in a statement yesterday (Monday) evening.

Two managing directors have also been appointed, with former Ferrari technical director and Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn to be in charge of motor-sports and ex-ESPN executive Sean Bratches to be responsible for F1 commercial operations.
