Formula E embraces virtual reality

The Formula E electric car-racing championship has entered into a partnership with virtual reality technology company Virtually Live.

Under the agreement, Virtually Live will continue to test live broadcasts of Formula E races in VR for the remainder of the 2015-16 season. The two parties have joined forces during a number of races already this season.

To mark the partnership, a series of VR-related events have been organised for this weekend’s ePrix in Long Beach, California. A fans forum will be held, while a downloadable race experience will also be made available to fans via the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive app stores.

“Virtual reality is one of the most exciting new ways to broadcast live sports and improve fans’ viewing experiences,” Formula E chief executive Alejandro Agag said. “Now, we can give fans that cannot attend a race in person the opportunity of feeling like they are actually immersed in the Formula E experience from any perspective.”

Further details of the partnership will be announced at the end of the 2015-16 season, which concludes with the London ePrix on the weekend of July 2-3.
