FIFA spokesman Keith Cooper on Monday confirmed reports quoting President Sepp Blatter as saying the world body was considering a rescheduling of the tournament, which is due to take place in Mexico from January 8-20.
A FIFA committee is due to meet on Tuesday next week to discuss a proposal, from within FIFA in consultation with those countries concerned, for a switch of dates.
The French daily sports newspaper L'Equipe reported on Sunday that Mexico had suggested a switch to August to allow France and Brazil to compete with their top players.
France, faced by firm opposition from European clubs refusing to release their internationals, withdrew on October 23 saying they would be unable to field a full strength side.
Blatter said in an interview with the French daily Le Figaro on Monday that he was disappointed by the French stance.
