Digicel claims NRL rights deal in Papua New Guinea

Telecommunications company Digicel has reportedly announced that it has acquired rights in Papua New Guinea for the National Rugby League, the top division of rugby league in Australia.

Ralph Siebenaler, the chief executive of the Digicel Play service, which launched in Papua New Guinea two months ago, was quoted in various reports as welcoming the deal at a press conference.

The reports added that selected games would be shown on the new TVWAN Rugby Channel through to the end of the current season.

However, commercial broadcaster EMTV, which has been showing coverage of the NRL, has said that neither the NRL nor the IMG Events & Media agency has notified the company of any changes to coverage of the league, according to news service ABC.
