LawAccord to address good governance in sport

Tagged in , , &

The SportAccord Convention has announced that its annual LawAccord event will address the key topic of the importance of good governance in sport.

LawAccord2012, organised in the framework of the SportAccord Convention, will take place on May 22 in Quebec City, Canada. The agenda-setting interactive workshop will debate how good governance is the cornerstone of preserving the autonomy of the sports movement.

A SportAccord statement read: "Sport has a strong tradition of self-regulation and has shown a willingness and determination to reform in order to protect the integrity and independence of its structures. Courts and regulators need to be cautious not to impose decisions and structures on the sports movement that have been designed for other business models."

The statement continued: "Correspondingly, to justify public confidence, the sports movement must set high standards of governance, particularly given that the level of funds that some sports now handle may attract interest from criminal activities be they match-fixing or money laundering. Sport must also be aware of the boundaries that public policy may set on its competence and the role that good governance plays in helping meet expectations of confidence."
