S1T deal is great timing for WRC

The International Motorsport Federation (FIA) has concluded its first major agreement for the World Rally Championship since the demise of promoter North One Sport by agreeing a deal with Stage 1 Technology (S1T).

The British firm will become the official timing and tracking supplier for the remainder of the WRC season after enhancing an initial one-event deal signed for the recently concluded Rally Sweden. S1T will provide the systems to track cars from the start to the finish of stages and the timing and results to classify them from every remaining event.

“Everybody's had quite a stressful start to the season, so to get this deal across the line in what is an exceptionally short space of time is a fair reflection on how much everybody wants it to work,” said S1T managing director Simon de Banke, according to Autosport. “I would like to pay tribute to the speed and ability with which everybody in the FIA has worked to expedite this. And for their foresight and support of the championship in taking the leadership to get our systems back online.”

The 2012 WRC season commenced in Monte Carlo last month without a promoter after the FIA terminated North One Sport's deal to promote the Championship, claiming the troubled company had breached its contract. The embattled Championship was dealt a fresh blow this month after the collapse of talks between the FIA and Eurosport for the promotion of the series.
