The Warriors lost the NRL Grand Final to the Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday and speculation has been growing that wealthy New Zealander Glenn is interested in acquiring a significant stake in the club. Watson and Mark Hotchin invested in the Warriors in 2000 and bought minor shareholders out in 2006, but Scurrah denied that a transaction was imminent.
“Eric Watson and Mark Hotchin are fully committed to the club and won't be relinquishing control,” Scurrah said. “Through their business relationships there are often people who express some interest in being part of the club.” Glenn had reportedly carried out due diligence process on a deal to buy Watson's stake, but a spokeswoman said he had not completed a deal.
Last week, Watson denied that he was considering relinquishing stake in the Auckland-based club, which is the only non-Australian team in the NRL, despite the intense speculation. “I am intending to remain as an investor and an owner of the Warriors,” Watson told The Herald. “I can't see any reason why not. Why would you stop now? We are only just starting to get going. It is a great investment.”
