Under the terms of the agreement, Caracol will also be able to exploit broadcast rights for the first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in January 2012 in Innsbruck, Austria. The deal is one of the final major broadcast contracts covering a large country ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.
“We are very pleased that Caracol Television has once again obtained the rights to the Olympic Games for Colombia,” Caracol Television president Carlos Alejandro Perez Davila said. “The London 2012 Olympic Games and the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games are world events of sporting excellence which we are proud to bring to our Colombian audience through our nationwide television network. The Olympic Movement and its ideals will be well represented through our first-rate coverage.”
IOC Executive Board member Richard Carrion, who led the negotiations, added: “I would like to thank the team at our partner Caracol Television for their co-operation in reaching this agreement, and for their commitment to provide fantastic free broadcast coverage of the Olympic Games in 2012.” IOC president Jacques Rogge also expressed his belief that Caracol Television is “well placed to provide great coverage”.
