Rogers to team up with TVA Sports

Tagged in , &

Rogers Communications has scrapped plans to launch its own French language TV sports channel and announced plans for Rogers Sportsnet to link up with TVA Sports, a new digital cable channel that will launch next month in Canada.

TVA Sports has already announced it will broadcast 25 Ottawa Senators games during the 2011-12 National Hockey League season, 60 Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball games next term and action from the Montreal Impact’s inaugural campaign in Major League Soccer. The channel will additionally air Ultimate Fighting Championship fights, UEFA Champions League games and boxing bouts.

“I think it was a natural thing for both organisations,” TVA Group president and CEO Pierre Dion told the Toronto Sun. “First of all it is a programme acquisition and content partnership, but also a production partnership. We came to a tentative agreement that will benefit both organisations.”

Dion added: “When the Jays and Senators are playing in Ontario, Sportsnet is obviously going to be there with its squad and equipment, and what TVA Sports is going to do is support them with more equipment and staff. That way we will offer a quality of product that has never been seen in Quebec. This will benefit sports organisations, athletes and fans. We will be able to offer a national broadcast to sports organisations but to the fans as well.”
