IAAF unveils rights deals ahead of World Championships

Dentsu, the commercial partner of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) outside Europe and Africa, has sealed rights deals covering 10 Asian territories and a selection of Pacific Islands for the IAAF World Championships later this month.

With less than a fortnight to go before the Championships get under way in the South Korean city of Daegu on August 27, the IAAF stated that free-to-air agreements had been reached in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Macao, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Timor, Fiji and Papua New Guinea as well as an array of smaller islands. “The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union agreement is especially welcome news as it closes TV sales for Daegu 2011 for territories outside Africa and Europe,” said IAAF president Lamine Diack.

IEC in Sports, the IAAF’s media agency for Europe and Africa, has also concluded a number of deals in Europe. In the Netherlands, public broadcaster NOS will carry the World Championships and in Switzerland a deal has been finalised with Swiss public broadcaster SRG for the next two editions of the event. The 2013 World Championships will take place in the Russian capital of Moscow.

Further rights agreements have been signed in Serbia and Albania, with RTS and RTHS penning deals, respectively. Under the terms of the deals, RTS will air Daegu 2011 and Moscow 2013, while in Albania the agreement covers all remaining IAAF World Athletics Series events from 2011-13 including the next two editions of the World Championships.
