Evian Masters to become a Major on LPGA Tour

The Evian Masters in France will become the fifth golf Major on the Ladies’ PGA Tour in 2013, commissioner Mike Whan announced on Wednesday.

The tournament will be shifted to the second week in September to be the final Major of the year and modifications to the size of the Evian course and holes will be made, according to The Associated Press. The Tour's other major events are the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the US LPGA Championship, the US Women's Open and the Women's British Open.

“In 2013 you will return to the fifth and final major on the LPGA Tour,” said Whan, who added that the announcement marked “a new page in women's golf history”. Whan also said that the other Majors on the calendar, such as the Kraft Nabisco, were not under threat following the addition of the Evian Championship.

“Kraft isn't going away in 2013 and there is no hidden agenda,” he said. “Kraft Nabisco is going to be a time, a place on our schedule as long as I'm commissioner. The plan is to have five truly mega events. We're going to take what was already one of the greatest settings in the game, what was already one of the greatest atmospheres in the game, what was already one of the greatest fields in the game and we're going to put on it one of the greatest monikers in the game.”

The tournament will change its name from the Evian Masters to the Evian Championship when it becomes a Major. The Evian Masters began in 1994, when Sweden's Helen Alfredsson won the competition.
