Badminton body launches YouTube channel

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced the soft-launch of an official live streaming and video-on-demand channel on YouTube.

The online channel at BadmintonWorld.tv is the product of a partnership between the BWF and Google that was facilitated by the governing body’s commercial advisory agency, Total Sports Asia. The channel will offer free online streaming of at least five matches per day, although the Federation added that broadcasts may be blocked to viewers in a tournament’s local region.

The initiative will be extended throughout the entire OSIM BWF World Superseries calendar, which runs annually from January to December, while online streaming for the five Premier editions of the Superseries will begin from the round of 16 matches. “This is another initiative from the BWF to reach out to more fans across all continents,” said BWF president Dr Kang Young Joong. “This is also in line with the BWF's aim to use different media platforms to raise the profile of the sport and the players.”

Kang added: “The BWF is excited with what the future holds for the sport and will continue to look into ways and means to enhance the visibility of the sport.” The Federation added that a greater variety of content would eventually be available on the channel. Organisers of the Copa America football tournament in Argentina announced last week that the competition would be aired live on YouTube this July.
