The 42-year-old event will remain on the PGA Tour schedule as ‘RBC Heritage presented by Boeing’ in its traditional spot the week after the Masters. Although financial details have not been publicly disclosed, reports suggest the agreement is worth US$7-8 million per year. RBC already sponsors the Canadian Open golf event while Boeing is locked into an agreement to build aeroplanes in Charleston, South Carolina.
In making the announcement, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem praised South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for her persistence in searching for a sponsor to link up with the springtime tournament at the Harbour Town Golf Links.
“I don't recall a time when any state official or elected official has put the energy and time and commitment behind making this happen as the governor has,” Finchem said, according to the Charlotte Observer. “She has been on this 24/7 for a number of weeks. She wasn't going to take no for an answer.”
Verizon announced that it was ending its 24-year sponsorship of the event two years ago, and the Heritage Foundation was forced to dip into its reserve funds to host this year’s tournament in April, which was won by Brandt Snedeker in a play-off over Luke Donald.
