RAI to carry Euro 2012 action in Italy

RAI has snapped up the exclusive Italian broadcast rights to Euro 2012, UEFA announced on Thursday.

RAI edged out Mediaset to acquire the rights to all 31 matches at the tournament, which will take place in Poland and Ukraine. RAI will carry the games live across its RAI Uno and RAI Due free-to-air channels. The live action will be complemented by a package of dedicated magazine and highlights programmes and RAI will also deliver “comprehensive” internet and mobile services on a live and on-demand basis.

The broadcaster also has the rights to this year’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship, which will take place in Denmark, starting on Saturday and running through to June 26. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with RAI, our long-standing broadcast partner in Italy for the UEFA European Football Championship,” said Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of UEFA Events SA.

“RAI has an exceptional track record of broadcasting major international sporting events and is the perfect home for UEFA Euro 2012,” he added. “Football fans in Italy will be offered an excellent broadcast platform and a fantastic viewing experience.” Italy lost 4-2 on penalties to eventual tournament winner Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.
