Snooker’s Masters moves to Alexandra Palace

The Masters, one of the highlights of the snooker calendar, will have a new home in 2012 after organisers of the event announced that it would move across London from Wembley Arena to Alexandra Palace.

The next edition of the prestigious invitation tournament will take place from January 15-22 with the event televised by BBC Sport, Eurosport and CCTV China. Alexandra Palace has 1,500 free car parking spaces, group travel facilities and simple access to both overground and underground stations.

World Snooker stated that The Masters would be given “a new lease of life by moving to the world famous Alexandra Palace” and cited the venue’s “much closer” proximity to central London than Wembley Arena.

“The Alexandra Palace is an absolutely fantastic venue, as we've found by staging the World Darts Championship there,” said World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn. “We've seen record ticket sales for the darts and I'm expecting to see the same for the snooker.”

Hearn added: “We’re keeping the event in London but the players are going to experience something new and wonderful. There's a great team in place at Alexandra Palace and we look forward to working with them again.”

Alexandra Palace Trading Limited managing director Rebecca Kane added: “Alexandra Palace has a strong heritage in bringing live entertainment to the fans from a unique setting overlooking the whole of London, making us the perfect venue for music and sport."
