Magners to end Celtic League backing

Cider producer Magners has confirmed it will end its title sponsorship of the Celtic League at the end of the current season.

The Celtic League was renamed the Magners League when the company took over as the main commercial partner of the rugby union competition in 2005. The League was established in 2001 following an agreement between the Irish Rugby Football Union, Scottish Rugby Union and Welsh Rugby Union.

“Magners will not be renewing their sponsorship of the Celtic rugby competition at the end of their current contract,” a Magners spokesman said. “Celtic Rugby is in negotiations with several potential sponsors.”

Italian car manufacturing giant Fiat is one of the companies being linked with a move for the vacant sponsorship, with Italian clubs Aironi Rugby and Benetton Treviso set to join the competition next season, bringing the total number of teams to 12.
