Under the terms of the strategic partnership, J Sports will acquire the Japanese broadcast rights to the English Premier League and French Ligue 1 competitions from MP & Silva. The international sports media agency is already advising J Sports on acquiring other sports content, with the broadcaster currently operating four premium sports channels in Japan and available.
“Given J Sports’ undisputed leadership position in Japan, we are extremely pleased to sign a partnership that will allow our sports content to reach the broadest sports-focused television audience in the country,” said MP & Silva’s managing director for Japan and Korea, Cho Su Hyeon.
“The strategic tie-up also gives us a rare opportunity to play a bigger role in helping our partner to drive more subscribers and increase commercial opportunities through our existing portfolio of rights and by leveraging the strength of our network of partners.”
Kazushige Sasajima, president of the J Sports Broadcasting Corporation, added: “Our partnership with MP & Silva will give us unparalleled access to the company’s portfolio of premium sports content, such as the English Premier League and Ligue 1.”
He added: “The deal reaffirms J Sports’ commitment to providing greater value and viewing options to our viewers, and consolidates our position as the top sports broadcaster in Japan. These first acquisitions strengthen our programming line-up and add even greater depth to our world-class sports programming, particularly in football.”
