NFL and union hold “beneficial” talks

National Football League (NFL) commissioner Roger Goodell has described the latest meeting with union officials over a new collective bargaining agreement as “beneficial”.

The League and the NFLPA staged their first formal meeting since November on Saturday, with both sides pledging to meet more often and increase the “intensity” of discussions ahead of the scheduled expiration of the current labour deal on March 3. “It's always a positive when both parties are talking,” Goodell told Fox News Sunday, just hours before the Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers. “We want to continue on with the integrity of the game, which is my No.1 issue.” A statement released by the League and the union on Saturday read: “The NFL and NFL Players Association met for two hours today in a continuing effort to narrow the differences and reach a fair agreement that will benefit the players, teams and fans. We plan to increase the number, length and intensity of bargaining sessions so that we can reach agreement.”
