Hundreds of fans had queued up outside the stadium to buy tickets for matches due to take place at the ground when a recently-renovated section gave way due to crowd pressure. According to reports, two people were injured in the collapse on Wednesday.
The incident occurred just days after an International Cricket Council inspection committee deemed Kolkata's Eden Gardens as an unsuitable venue, forcing the big clash between India and England on February 27 to be switched to M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
“The wall is at the periphery of the stadium and a small portion of it collapsed when fans pressed against it. It was a minor incident,” said Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary KS Viswanathan, in quotes reported by the Press Association.
Chennai is earmarked for four matches during the 14-team World Cup, starting with New Zealand’s match with Kenya on February 20. India will host the tournament along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
