ESPN and TSN snap up UEFA Euro rights

UEFA confirmed on Tuesday that ESPN has snapped up the rights to the Euro 2012 and 2016 tournaments in the United States, while TSN will air the competitions in Canada.

ESPN will provide live coverage and highlights of all matches in English and Spanish, while in Canada the action will be carried in English on TSN and TSN2 and in French via RDS and RIS. The deals also include media rights for the UEFA European Under-21 Championships and the Women’s Euro 2013 tournament.

The multi-platform rights will allow the broadcasters to air match action on the Internet as well as via mobile.

“Following a very successful experience with UEFA Euro 2008, we are extremely pleased to extend our partnership with ESPN and TSN for the next two tournaments,” said Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of UEFA Events SA, the commercial arm of European football’s governing body.

“With interest in football growing significantly in North America, both broadcasters will no doubt provide great visibility for UEFA's national team competitions through their promotional and programming capacity,” added Epstein. “These long-term partnerships demonstrate the strength of the Euro as a global property and, together with ESPN and TSN we are committed to further enhancing it in the future.”
