Eurosport aces new Australian Open deal

Australian Open tennis action will remain on Eurosport for five more years after the broadcaster struck a new deal with Tennis Australia.

The 2012 Australian Open will mark the beginning of a new agreement to carry the Grand Slam to more than 56 countries and 121 million homes across Europe. The deal will extend the pan-European broadcaster’s support of the tournament to more than two decades.

“This new agreement ensures that viewers in Europe will continue enjoying live extensive coverage of the Australian Open for many years to come,” said Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood.

“Eurosport have once again shown their commitment to our tournament and together we will strive to raise the profile of tennis – both as a televised sport and by generating grassroots interest,” he added.

Laurent-Eric Le Lay, Eurosport Group chairman and CEO, said: “Holding exclusive media rights for Europe, Eurosport will showcase this premium event on Eurosport, Eurosport 2 and HD versions. Multi-court service will be further developed on the Eurosport.com network and its mobile services.”

This year’s Australian Open concluded on Sunday with Novak Djokovic beating Andy Murray in straight sets in the men’s final.
