JOC chief still keen on Hiroshima Olympic bid

Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda has insisted he is still supportive of a bid from Hiroshima for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The JOC is hoping Tokyo, which was a candidate city for the 2016 Games tender, will also launch a fresh bid. Takeda made the pledge after Tadatoshi Akiba, the Mayor of Hiroshima and the leading advocate of the bid, announced he would not seek re-election this spring.

Last April, Akiba salvaged Hiroshima’s bid by organising a special assembly session in order to approve a motion to reinstate crucial funding for the bid.

“The city has a wonderful proposal,” said Takeda, according to Kyodo News. “I would be extremely happy if the city of Hiroshima continues to consider making a bid for the Olympics.”

He added: “We have to keep tabs on the situation going forward. Right now, I can’t really say anything more.”
