London organisers urged to replicate Vancouver “passion”

Organisers of the London 2012 Olympics need to replicate the “passion” of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games to ensure the success of the event, according to officials from the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Memos from DCMS officials who visited the Vancouver Games were obtained by The Vancouver Sun, which used the freedom of information act. The memos revealed a number of candid observations, both positive and negative.

According to the memos, Volunteers at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics were “not adequately looked after (only one meal a day, few warm areas, 'last to know' about Games results, some had long commute)”. The Games’ colour scheme was also criticised for being “pale and too complex” while spectators also found it difficult to get to venues due to poor signage.

However, the memos also stated that the free Robson Square live sites were “a huge success”, the security plan worked well, and the Vancouver public helped to lift the Games.

“The security regime in place was not obtrusive and looked low key, but despite that appeared effective,” stated the DCMS, which added that the Vancouver organising committee staff were “very relaxed, but in control”.

As a key piece of advice, London 2012 organisers should “ensure the city and people embrace the Games”. It was added: “If we can go some way to creating the same passion within London and throughout the UK as was witnessed in Vancouver, the Games will be a resounding and memorable success.”
