Ukraine attempts to lure F1 with new Kiev circuit

Plans have been unveiled for a new motorsport circuit in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, with the ultimate aim of bringing Formula One to the country.

The head of the state administration department, Anatoliy Prysiazhniuk, has revealed the city will build a 5.2 kilometre circuit at a cost of $1 billion, with work scheduled to start early next year. The circuit, scheduled for completion by 2013, will be situated on 100 hectares of land on the outskirts of the city.

“We will build an international track in the Polissia and Ivankiv districts in order to host international competitions,” said Prysiazhniuk, according to the Kyiv Post. “I saw the project, and experts from Europe assessed it.”

He added: “The project was drafted by a person from Denmark who built the tracks in the (United Arab) Emirates, Singapore and other countries. The track will meet all modern requirements.” The development will also include a number of hotels, according to reports.

Ukraine’s international sporting profile will come under the spotlight in 2012 when the country co-hosts the UEFA European Championships with Poland.
