Omega Commonwealth Games sponsorship under investigation

Watchmaker Omega, one of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s global sponsors, has been asked by the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for details of the contract it entered into to provide timing, scoring and results for last month’s Commonwealth Games.

According to the Daily Telegraph, there is concern that the Delhi organising committee overlooked a cheaper Spanish tender for the contract of official timing provider.

The CBI, which said some Indian agents of Swiss Timing were under investigation, say the contract awarded to Omega’s subsidiary company Swiss Timing was five times the cost of a similar contract for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Senior Games officials Lalit Bhanot (secretary general) and V.K.Verma (director general) have already been charged with criminal conspiracy and cheating under the Prevention of Corruption Act in relation to the awarding of the contract.

Swiss Timing director-general Christophe Berthaud rejected the charges and said the company would co-operate in a completely transparent manner and provide documents to the authorities.
