Airports a potential embarrassment in 2014, says Brazil minister

Brazil’s sports minister Orlando Silva has expressed serious concerns over the state of the country’s airports for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

On the opening day of the Soccerex Global Convention in Rio de Janeiro, Silva revealed not enough progress has been made so far in improving terminals in the host cities.

He said: “When we think about an event of this size and that Brazil is almost a continent, and that you can only travel around by plane, then we realise that this is the biggest risk for the 2014 World Cup.

“I think Infraero [Brazil’s airport authority] will have to change its conduct, behaviour and attitude, otherwise Brazil could suffer embarrassing situations in 2014.”

The federal government has set aside 5.5 billion Brazilian reais ($3.2 billion) for airport refurbishment in the 12 host cities.
