Birmingham set to stage Diamond League meeting

Birmingham is to join New York, Rome, Shanghai and Monaco as one of the 14 host cities of the Samsung Diamond League next summer.

The city council signed a three-year deal with UK Athletics to bring the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix to the Alexander Stadium, which will undergo a £12.25 million development.

“This is another major sporting coup for the city of Birmingham, underlining our status as Britain’s sporting city,” said Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby.

“One of the reasons the IAAF, the International Federation, was keen to come to Birmingham was because of its reputation,” added UK Athletics Chief Executive Niels de Vos. “It’s always hosted great meets.”

The stadium’s redevelopment will include office space to be built underneath a 5,000-seat stand, the rent for which will go towards paying the improvement costs.
