Players’ union almost sure of NBA lockout

The National Basketball Association (NBA) players’ union believes the league is likely heading to a lockout next season.

NBA’s current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire in July and negotiations between team owners and players have not made any progress.

“I’d be 99 per cent sure as of today there will be a lockout,” players’ union executive director Billy Hunter told the New York Times. “I’ve said ‘Save your money because in all probability there’s going to be a lockout.’”

“I’m waiting to get some sign, some movement from owners, that they want to reach a reasonable deal,” he added. “Right now they’re being unreasonable. And I can’t tell you when reason is going set in.”

The owners want to cut players’ wages by nearly 40 per cent and shorten contracts in an effort to reduce their debts.
