Revenue shortfall hits Australia cricketers’ pay

Cricket Australia’s 180 players are to face a AUS$500,000 pay cut due to a AUS$16 million shortfall in projected revenues this summer.

According to Australian newspaper The Sun-Herald, Cricket Australia general manager of finance and business services Kate Banozic sent a letter to players informing them of the decision.

“Whilst this isn’t great news to have to deliver to players, it is important to note we are currently in difficult financial times and cricket is not immune from these,’’ she wrote.

Cricket Australia public affairs manager Peter Young added that ‘‘gate hasn’t been what we expected … Currency exchange rates have had an effect, and the ICC World Cup dividend was lower than we projected.’’

Under the agreement with Cricket Australia, the players are entitled to 26 per cent of the governing body’s revenue.
