Wu re-elected president of boxing federation

Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu was yesterday re-elected president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA). The Taiwanese official, who was the only candidate, will serve a second four-year term.

The vote was taken by the 106 member countries represented at the AIBA Congress in Almaty. The election was overseen by former International Olympic Committee director general Francois Carrard.

Wu became AIBA president in 2006 by defeating long-time incumbent Anwar Chowdhry, who was later barred for alleged financial corruption.

"You have all demonstrated that you want the new AIBA," Wu said. "You want continuous reform. You want a very clean, honest and transparent organisation. I give this commitment to you: I will do everything I can to make sure we are a clean organisation."

Four AIBA vice presidents were also re-elected: Abdullah Bessalem for Africa, Domingo Solano for the Americas, Humbert Furgoni for Europe and Keith Walker for Oceania.
