NFL considers multiple games in the UK

The National Football League (NFL) is drawing up plans to stage multiple regular season games in London, and possibly other UK cities, once it agrees a new labour contract with its players.

For the fourth consecutive year the NFL held a regular season game in London, with the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers facing each other last night at Wembley.

“This is one of the reasons why we’re looking at expanding our regular season by taking away two pre-season games, which will allow us to play more games abroad,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told the Economist Global Sport Summit in London on Friday.

“Playing multiple games will demonstrate there’s a strong foundation for the game here,” he added. “Once you get to that point, you’ll feel confident that a franchise here will be successful.”

Goodell said the International Series game in London has helped move NFL fans in the UK and Europe from “casual” to the “avid” category.
