The franchise, which could not find a replacement sponsor for the consumer electronics producer, will be replaced with the South Korean outfit the Incheon Redwings. Videocon backed out of its sponsorship agreement with Delhi citing “unavoidable circumstances”.
“This was a very difficult decision to take with just over a month to go until the start of the first regular season,” said Ivan Khodabakhsh, chief executive of the WSB. “However, we were very fortunate to find an investor quickly in order to move forward with the WSB Asia Conference with all four teams without any problem. We would therefore like to welcome the Incheon Redwings to the WSB family.”
The Redwings will take over the international boxers previously signed by Delhi and will additionally employ their own national boxers in accordance with WSB rules. The WSB comprises 12 city-based franchise teams spread across three regional conferences of Asia, the Americas and Europe. The inaugural season starts next month.
