Miami teams collide over radio coverage

National Basketball Association (NBA) team Miami Heat has filed legal action Clear Channel Broadcasting, claiming the company is in breach of their contract by favouring National Football League (NFL) franchise Miami Dolphins.

The Heat had signed a contract giving the team “priority broadcast position” on the Clear Channel’s Miami radio stations, but was surprised when Clear Channel agreed a “more favourable” deal with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins’ contract ensures its games are broadcast on the “extremely powerful station” of WBGG-FM as well as on WINZ-AM, both owned by Clear Channel.

After a high-profile off-season, when it signed NBA’s most valuable player LeBron James, the Heat now faces having its October 31 game blacked out on the FM station as the Dolphins will play at the same 1pm slot.

Clear Channel said it was “not willing to provide the Heat with any of the more beneficial material terms granted to the Dolphins.”
